I have never been a big fan of 12 gauge guns for upland bird hunting BUT this gun spoke to me in many ways. It's a best gun from James Purdey, a self opener with 27 inch barrels choked .004 & .008. It's what they call a Light Game Gun and weighs just 6 lbs. With 3/4 and 7/8 oz loads it will make a nice upland gun.

The wood isn't much to look at but the English aren't noted for their wood anyway. Manufacture date is 1922. The barrels are off having new ivory beads installed as it came with red Bradley type beads the horror of it

It will see the Grouse coverts then the Quail fields of south Georgia.

Nice! I haven't yet had the chance to handle a British "best" gun.

Default wood figure

From the third photo it looks like a lot of nice figure in the stock.

It sure does. I've had a few Parkers with a dark and aged finish like that where the grain and figure could hardly be seen. I had the wood only refinished and the figure pops now.

But, the British, being British, don't really care to overstate anything and they prefer dark, understated wood - even on their finest guns.
