That's the puzzlement I've had about the number of birds on the floor plate of Parkers.

Almost inevitably a;
Grade 2 will have 2 birds
Grade 3 will have 4 birds
Grade 4 will have 5 birds (if it has birds at all)
Grade 5 will rarely have birds at all

There is apparently no correlation between the grade number and the number of birds on the floor plate.

My guess would be a Virginia rail.

May be a not-so-good depiction of a woodcock. Looks more like a woodcock than some of the ducks resemble ducks.

Or snipe or woodcock. Why is it some of the engraving is beautiful and others are...looking for the right word here......... rough ?

Actually, it is a really nice engraving and it is most likely a woodcock. The position of the eye - the short legs - the tail in the up position - the long "bec", even though it comes to a fine point - all say 'woodcock' to me.

We've never seen one like that before and probably never will see another. Very Nice Brother Hall!

No Dean what I meant was the overall engraving of the Parker guns up to C grade, not Jimmy's gun. Why all the flying turnips and other engraving on Parkers C grade and lower and then others with such fine engraving like Larry's ?
