10 ga 000 loads

was trying to clean and arrange a few things in the man cave this morning and got side trackedwhen i picked up a old jug that my dad had stored these old 000 buck in..well there sat some hulls in the short ten version thatlooked like they needed to be loaded up with some 000... i chose winchester hulls for the loading andone of petesloading data with bluedot powder..well 8 of them 000 weigh in at just under a 1 1/2 ounces so heres my load...the load data was for a 1 1/2 ounce of bismuth i just substuted lead for the bismuth.. winchester 10 ga hull cut to 2 7/8 inch 209 winchester primer 40 grains of bluedot powder sp 10 wad 8 no 000 buck a little toilet paper for filling and 10 ga over shot wad and roll crimped.. the pressure given for the bismuth load was 8000 so im sure the leadwas about the same... i then tested the load in the old ph 10 ga parker full choke both barrels 32 inch.. used a sheet of school note book paper as a target...40 steps the range... put 6 of them 000 in the paper the first shot ... completely missed it the secound shot blamed the miss on the wind blowing the target around...3 rd and final shot all 8 000 in the target... all of the shot would have been in a 15 inch circle... should be a very effective deer round..recoil waspleasant...old parkers a 3 frame at 9 1/2 lbs so recoil is slight.. this will be my hunting round for the deer.... charlie

Neat load, Charlie! I wondered about using standard shot measures for buckshot. If I remember correctly, my one ounce measure will not hold an ounce of buckshot. I figured the proper way to make the best of the powder to shot ratio would be to weigh the payload of buckshot.

yes i believe when using buckshot loads a person can swap out data with thelead shot load and be safe...just make sure to weigh the buckshot... charlie

Charlie, your photos of the 10 gauge shell popped up at the bottom of my screen today. That is a very nice example of a 'commercial handload'. That may not be a correct term, but the '1901' hulls were only sold empty. Selby may have been a large sporting or hardware distributor. Drew Hause may have some info on the name. Yours is a load of 30 grains of Ballistite with 1-1/8 ounces of number 7 shot.

That's what I call a compact shell. I was looking in my old First Edition Lyman book from 1969 and found a 10 gauge Remington Peters SP 2 7/8" load that allowed nine 000 pellets at 1,405 FPS and a 12 pellet load of 00 buck at 1,385 FPS, both using PB powder in stack loads.

Recent reloading manuals do not show 000 buck at all. And only 3 1/2" hulls. Times, they are achangin.

boy both of them loads are pretty fast...i could get the 9 pellets of 000 in my loads but the crimp did not look rite so i leave it at 8... john was there any pressure given for your books load...also would be interested in the loading data for these 2 loads of yours..old pete has made me a collector of factory loaded 10 ga recipes...pete lester has made it easy for us 10 ga shooters and reloaders... thanks john for the info.... charlie
