10 Ga Sn 33036 barrel identification
Hi all, I recently picked up this matching number 10 Ga hammer gun which I have always wanted BUT I know nothing about. Ya'lls wonderful forum has supplies a lot of education. What a fantastic web site you have put together. Any way a brief description: 10 Ga hammer gun, older very very amateur restoration, blued barrels, metal work has had a torch passed over to set toning, set notches filed from eccentrics with only full cock or the hammers laying directly on the firing pins. Wood work like new, 32" barrels. Very tight action. Nice barrels. Here are the numbers I found on the barrel and am a bit curious what they mean and please bear with me as I probably do nor know the correct nomenclature to describe where the numbers are located so here goes. All of this is on the bottom of the barrels:
Right barrel area: 18678 on barrel, D with high J, 5 with high 8, S forward of chamber on flat area.
Left barrel: Pato June 25, 1878 also directly under Patd April 11, 1878 on flat area. Also a + on the barrel.
On the barrel latch: A in front of a 3 also a stamp that looks like a cats paw but may be a A over B. Only have a 10X Jewelers loop so not sure. On the side of the latch the serial # 33036 which matches the rest of the numbers on the weapon.
I have had a Gunsmith closely exam the weapon and he feels it is safe to shoot once the firing mechanism is repaired, With that said can anyone recommend a Black Powder charge to get me started? I will be using brass hulls. I am hoping to make this my Turkey gun for in the swamps and have already put a holster on the airboat for it to ride in. Thanxxxxxxxx Lonnie
