Got my very new old I grade hammer gun in on the goose action for the last two days of the gunning season. Enjoyable and successful but I am curious how to go about cleaning it to preserve its condition while still enjoying it fully in the field. I think the gun may have been waxed by its previous owner? how do you clean and oil the metal around the hammers without causing oil damage to the stock?
help and methods appreciated

Stay away from petroleum products when dealing with BP. I use Ballistol it works great in protecting your metal and wood. You can wipe the whole gun down with it. I used a 10 ga in pretty nice condition for two years on the salt water and haven't received any unexpected surprises.

Already love ballistol with good results but not sure whether to believe the hype that it doesnt harm wood.

I have used Ballistol for years on wood and metal on all my Parkers.I have had guns soaking wet and after a thorough cleaning and an application of this stuff not a speck of rust ever...

I think so much about Ballistol, that I buy it by the gallon about $65. It is great on wood, leather and metal
