I have always just shortened it to forend regardless of what my ‘electronic device’ tells me.
I have also always been a student of the origination of words. I wonder if “forend” derived from fore-end may have derived from ‘the piece of the gun upon which your ‘fore hand’ is placed, thence the contraction ‘fore ‘and’ thence ‘fore-end’? The hyphenated word ‘fore-end’ makes much less sense to me, the ‘end’ part of it being almost meaningless as it might relate to a part of a gun... Hey Sammy - what are your thoughts? .

Nomenclature, if you want to understand the essence of communication have grandchildren and listen to the things they come up with. My granddaughter at 4 would call that the wood thingy you put your hand on to hold it and and aim it. Would she be wrong, would she have communicated her meaning? If she was wrong you tell her i am not going to.
