I can only think that grilling woodcock breasts would tend to over cook them. They should be cooked to 'rare' at the most for the best texture and flavor.

In any case, it sounds like a wonderful day and a great feed... all except the cod (maybe I've just had too much cod in my life, living in coastal Massachusetts the whole time).

10 degrees isn't so bad if you keep moving...
