Think of the process of fitting the butt plate to the stock
. The ovrer sized butt plate is inletted/fitted to the wood
. The sandinging process is the applied to make all surfaces smooth
. The finish is then applied
I ALWAYS look for crazeing and finish on the butt plate on lower grade guns . This only my opinion as to process and final finish.
