Timothy,

A friend of a friend was chiding me for using my M42 on doves. I really never gave it much thought as it has always worked fine at reasonable ranges. That comment started me down the patterning rabbit hole..

Best,
Brett

Bill, I am sure you mentioned duplicating Bristers drive by experiments to the lovely Linda. I mentioned it to my Miss Annie and got a look that would stop a charging cape buffalo. I quietly backed out of the room as I apologized. Amazing that Brister got anyone to drive that car, much less his wife.

John, everyone should read Brister's "Shotgunning, the Art and Science" book, a great read. A great guy who hosted what was mostly a pigeon shooting column in a metropolitan newspaper.

Shot doves last weekend in Beeville TX. Friday with my .410 SxS mod/full, Saturday with my 26" "G" damascus IC/mod. Pretty breezy both days. My conclusion is 30 yards or so with the .410 was my honest max effective range, hate wounding birds I know will die without recovering them. The 16 mod put several down dead at roughly 40 yards. Lots of deep grass all around the water hole I was hunting but the nose on my 2 year old lab "Mate" was in good working order and lost no birds. Isn't a good dog a wonderful thing? I'm sure I'd have lost half the birds I downed without his help and he had a HUGE time!
