I found that out in my younger days when I hunted deer with hounds, on drives. I wanted the tightest patterns possible with the largest buckshot possible. I learned that 00 was the largest size I could use through a Full choke without getting flyers. Federal Premium 00 was copper plated and patterned the best of all.

Let’s remember, Askins was writing about paper shells with fiber wads and bare shot. A far cry from modern shells with polymer shotcups.
