It's a regional thing. The Wal-Mart stores in and around the Fredericksburg, Virginia area still sell firearms and ammunition.

I just read that the original Dick's store in Binghamton, NY is closing. They made a massive mistake when they dropped the sales of firearms, ammunition, and hunting gear. I don't think they even have fishing gear anymore.

My wife's home town, I shopped there for over 40 years every time we visited there. They dug their own grave when they stopped catering to the "blood sports." Another classic example of "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" in retail!

I used to buy my NYS non-resident license there on my way home to CNY or to the ADK. I always thought it was nice that they still displayed hunting clothes and gear in the old storefront windows.

I have not been in a few since now you can just purchase the license and print it out on-line.

My suspicion is Dick's will eventually go the way of many retail stores. Quietly closing locations down.
