“Mill marks” is a misnomer. The fancy lines have nothing to do with milling or a mill machine tool. Essentially they’re a decorative embellishment created by rubbing a thin steel bar against the breech faces in a specific radial pattern. Sometimes extremely fine abrasive was used on the steel bar.
