Shoot it at a pattern board set at distances that you customarily expect to shoot your selected gamebirds at. If it patterns too tightly I too, would suggest using spreader loads and it has been the experience of a few members here, myself included, that even out to thirty or thirty-five yards they will produce killing patterns with #8 shot.

I too am a fan of using spreader loads. I have a few different styles that I use depending on gauge. Also short shot cup wads or wads with no shot cup at all work well when wanting a more open pattern. I really don't like messing with those wonderful Parker chokes and I open a gun up only as a last resort.
