And take a close look at the serial number stamped into the forend iron... originally stamped as 208720 and then the 0 was over-stamped with the 8.

Yup - the underside of the trigger guard is where the problem began and then the engraver simply engraved the number that was stamped on the other side...

I am following your logic and agree. My only problem was I read the inlet as a 209 which would mean the underside trigger guard stamp and the inlet were mistakes.
I don't recall if the skeleton is stamped on the underside as well? I don't take them apart if I don't have a need.
