I use RIG to wipe down the metal for a lot of outdoor-use equipment and have for decades. It has proven to be great at rust prevention and it does well as a lubricating grease too. I do not intentionally use it on wood, although some will inadvertently end up on adjoining wood surfaces. I've never seen it damage any sort of wood finish in any way.
