So if you mounted a gun up to your shoulder as a back-stop, the barrel would remain stationary (figuratively speaking) as your shoulder stops rearward movement of the frame once the gun is fired? Don't misunderstand, I'm not suggesting that the cartridge carries the barrel like a projectile, of course.
