As a preservative, I'm partial to RIG (Rust Inhibiting Grease) Buy a Rig Rag, which is an impregnated lambs wool patch, and a small tub of RIG, and you've got lifetime protection, IMHO

I for one cannot shake the wonderful smell of Hoppe's. Although there's "better", I've never had any problem.

Is today's Hoppe's the same as the stuff I grew up with? Seems to me that I read that the old stuff was bad for you - but, boy, did it smell good!

The blue and yellow can has been working for me for a long time without failure or a problem.

I believe Parker Bros recommended "3 'n 1" oil. I don't know if the old formula is still available, but it smells the same.

Parker Bros. also recommended Signet Oil. This info can be found on certain hang tags. As for me it Hoppes and Ballistol.

I;ll second the Hoppe's #9 for solvent and Ballistol for oil.
