Yes, I did think about the possible risks involved with using a chemical coating. I decided that I would experiment and keep a very close eye on the guns for any signs of trouble caused by it. If I find anything of concern I'll go to plan-B which is to cover each cut-out with lambs wool & a light coating of rig applied to where the gun would rest.

I've had the shelf installed for almost a month now & haven't seen anything which alarms me yet.
