"BBS" is an older term (Bulletin Board System/Service). Back in the late 80's - there were BBSs' like FidoNet, XRX/Parc, etc (yea - I did those - 4K TRS over a 300 BAUD modem!! I was "rockin'
).. Those evolved into Multi-quote, single line BBS systems, like WebBBS in the mid/late 90's (which is when I programmed/hosted my first Internet BBS with)..
Forums are a more common term, or portal - as in this format (multitopic/multi-line) - but many still call them simply BBS...
