I think the wooden 'dowel' in the butt is to fill a hole where the screw of a BHBP went, so they could re-drill for a screw for the recoil pad. The 'dowel' behind the grip cap looks like someone filled a hole from a sling swivel.
Just me, over here, guessing.

Except that the scribed centerline, done at the Parker Bros. factory, runs right across the dowel plug so I don't think it was done when the pad was installed.

If you blow it up, you'll see that the larger circle, with evidence of the scribed line, is the impression of the boss on the back of the DHBP. The smaller circle, plugging the screw hole, has no scribed line.
