Thanks, Larry and Dave. I'm looking at a nice British gun with a mark that looks like the Whitworth mark but no "trade mark" surround. I think it is a real Whitworth mark because the maker has used Whitworth barrels on some of his guns. I'll let you know if I score.

Bill you will notice that in the picture above that the left barrel dose not have the Trade Mark stamp. It is unclear if that part of the stamp was struck from the barrel or if the Trade Mark and Sheaves of Wheat were two individual stamps and the Trade Mark only applied to one barrel of the pair. If you look closely at the stamp below it would appear that to completely remove the Trade Mark stamp with a file you would also remove most or all of the Sheath stamp which would indicate to me they were two separate stamps.

Thanks for the comments, Larry. We are learning something here. However, the gun I'm looking at has a mark that is looking less like the Whitworth sheaves all the time. It is still a great gun and I may bite the bullet. Hope to see some of you posters at the Northeast. Thanks again for the pictures.
