Yes. Vaneering on a piece of thin walnut, with the outline of the action panel being the breaking point of the vaneer edge is the best way to hide a hole in a stock head.
Other possibilities would be to checker the cheek panels. Or even go as far as I laying in a piece that is the shape of the checkered panel and then checkering it so that there is no evidence of a pin through the checkering.
