Default Barrel Markings and Weep Hole help

Hello,

hoping to get a little help here.

I am looking at a very nice remington VHE 12 ga which i beleive to be original. Two questions:

1. The barrel flats have some stamps I am not familiar with. It looks like it is stamped XSS3...anybody know whatr that means?

2. Was it common for Remington to drill weep holes in the lower rib during the bluing process?

see pictures attached ...

appreciate the help here.

James
