Hugh,
It would be my guess the chokes would have been removed as a straight sleeve inserted into a straight cylinder bore would be the easiest way to get the job done. As Channing said if removed you would most likely find the original reason for the sleeves and it might not be pretty. If it were me and I wanted to proceed with this project I would send the gun to Kirk Merrington and get his opinion.
