Default Toning down a polished receiver

My Trojan 16 had the action buffed or polished at some point before I acquired it; it's a little shinier than I'd like. Is there something that could darken it down a little without taking the stock off? I've heard of things like rubbing it with ammonia or lemon juice etc. but have never tried anything.
