Off Season Rations

So, after all the fun of the hunt and the excellent dog work and the mishap known as BIP (Bird in Pattern), the quarry becomes food. First it is transformed from the feathered beauty of a rooster pheasant into skinless portions which are soaked in brine over night. Next day they are packaged into ziploc bags in quantities for one (me). Then they are doled out over the winter. One bird gets me four meals (provided it isn't too badly shot up). I end my season (usually) with six birds in the freezer (possession limit here). Today was one of those days to have a nice lunch of pheasant legs. Just some veggies, a lemon marinade and two legs. Turned the legs off one of these two into the meal. This is what my signature line is all about.

What do dogs know that we don't. Sometimes (more often than really should happen) I miss my mouth with the fork and the tasty morsel hits the floor. No two second rule here. Either Charlie or Kyra will be on it in a nano-second. Today it was 1/4 mushroom. Kyra nailed it and spit it out. Charlie investigated and wouldn't touch it. Lest we think it be something in the sauce, I can say it is not. They each had one carrot just because they too like veggies but neither will ever touch mushroom. Do they know something that humans have yet to figure out?????

Those are great photos of great country. I like the look of those pheasant "rations". Might those be Canadian roosters?

Indeed they are Canadian. The northern fringe of the habitat is approx 40 miles north of 49th parallel. These ones were taken near Radville, Saskatchewan. If I were to travel almost due south, I could stand with one foot in MT, the other in ND and set the butt stock of the GHE in SK Canada. But, I would never do that. Homeland security would be watching I'm sure.

Yeah, temperature is a pretty relative thing. My heat wave today is -20C or as you say, 4 below and the wind is whipping pretty hard. Dogs only got about 40 minutes run (not their choice, I'm the wimp). Mushrooms and I get along okay. We can both handle being kept in the dark and fed BS from time to time. Cheers, Jack
