W&C Scott Breech Face Question:

This is a Hammer Sidelock from 1868. The Breech Face is quite unusual. Perhaps it's obvious to some of you. I'm just scratching my old head. I'm just guessing they are probably a "Loaded Chamber" indicators.

I can’t say that I know what those are. W&C Scott were quite innovative in breech face modifications or in fact, even production guns. Case in point, the W&C Scott patented gas check system in the breech face. I have pictures of a Grade 6 Parker with the gas check system modification done probably after the patent had run out.

But the one you show has me stumped.

I have a Manufrance Ideal 12g grade 6 with the same thing. It tells you if there is a shell in the chamber... or not.

Can't see where they are any kind of indicators. Looks like a overload relief. Kind of like Greener had on their muzzleloaders. Sold my Scott book long ago but do not recall seeing this before.

Milt is right. I have a Manufrance and the Scott loaded chamber indicators are identical to those on my Ideal.

They are loaded chamber indicators. When a shell is in the chamber it pushes the plunger out so it is visible next to the firing pin. The left one looks like it may be broken.
