This is Starting Out After Rail by Thomas Eakins, c. 1874; the original watercolor hangs in the Wichita Art Museum. He produced the painting in oils as well. I had a very nice reproduction of this that I bought at the Goodwill. It had a Wichita Art Museum sticker on the back of the frame but for some reason my wife wasn't a fan so it ended up in a garage sale I think. I've often been sorry about that...

Nice painting and very realistic depiction of small boat sailing. Looks like a schooner in the distance entering the harbor under a full compliment of sails.

Wrong sails for a schooner. Those square-rigged sails are of a packet or or barque or some other large multi-masted ship.

In January 2002 the Philadelphia Museum of Art sponsored an exhibit of around 106 original paintings (mostly oil) and 23 or so sketches by Thomas Eakins (1844-1916). The vast majority of the works were loaned from private collections and were in outstanding original condition.

Being a Philly boy by birth and a rail hunter by avocation, I wasn't about to miss this! I drove up from home in northern VA on one of the coldest days I can ever remember, primarily to see the painting below, "Pushing for Rail", which he painted practically in view of the city on the Delaware River. It was more than worth the drive.

Thomas Eakins outdoor watercolor and oil paintings are my favorite.Eakins portrait paintings were right up there with John Singer Sargent. J.J.
