Tru-Oil would more likely be mostly boiled linseed oil and some drying agents. Shellac is used more as a friction type of polish. Sometime it is mixed with waxes and or a little boiled linseed oil. I am not sure how the tru-oil would really bond to the vaseline...??? Maybe the solvents in the BLO mix with the vaseline or lift it from the pad ?? I haven't used this method but I am sure that it would work. Once it dries it probably is a little slippery and will mount much better than a fresh rubber pad will.

Put on the furst coat of varnish and it took almost 6-days to dry. Put on a secong coat today and I think I put on too much. I guess I'll find out in a couple of days. If temps were not enough to keep me out of the woods I have been fighting a virus all week that has had me on my butt so all I can do is look forward to getting out with this gun.

Jay,
My method has always been duck blood and bacon grease with a thin coating of "blue" mud. Destry

Destry, I like your idea the best. I'll make a deal with you: I'll supply the bacon grease if you'll supply the mud. This 20 is choked IM/IM and should make a heck of a gun for woodies and teal.

I'll pick up a couple handfuls next time I'm down south where the real stuff comes from.

Steve,
Tried to take a couple yesterday but the lighting did not cooperate. I think they came out REALLY well. Great contrast. J |
