deer keds

[Woodcock survey]

Having hunted deer for 50 years from Maine to Pennsylvania Sat. my son shot a buck that at first seemed to be infested with ticks, nothing new there. Upon a closer look they were deer keds according to Google. Having never seen them before i was wondering what experiences others have had with them.

At every turn lately a new invasive is turning up.

if you google them they seem to be an invasive from europe with a strange life cycle. they have been in some parts of the country for some time.
My sons and friends have been butchering our deer for some time since it became too expensive to have it done and this is a first. They are very obvious in that they move much faster than a tick.

I’ve dealt with keds a few times when deer hunting up around Shohola Lake gamelands in the Poconos of Pennsylvania, during years when the weather was warm. They’re quite irritating as they land or crawl up on you and make their way to your neck and up into your hair. I’ve never been bitten or anything but it’s unnerving and irritating.

I think 2002 or 2003 I hunted the first week of the PA season around Sterling and Newfoundland PA . That year from mid morning until the evening you could hunt in a t-shirt and as expected the deer had plentiful herds of ticks but I never noticed any of these keds things .

I've hunted deer in the Poconos all my life and never encountered Keds. Maybe the numerous ticks chase them off.
By the way, I'm 77 and I started when I was 10.
