I was asked about this by another member considering purchase of that gun. It was odd that it was not pictured or mentioned in the sale listing. But it was disclosed by the seller.
That marking is not factory. It was put on there by some party after the fact in a way to try and avoid someone from overcharging it with the improper shells. I assume this is on your restored VHE?

Did your gun have Remington repair markings on the barrel flats?

This marking is NOT on the restored VHE which is a 1937 12 gauge. This marking is on an early 20's 16 gauge which I believe is original other than this marking.
There are NO repair codes on the flats.
