Default First Retrieve

"Fish", a 7-month old Griff made his first search and retrieve the other day on a ruffed grouse and then pranced about as though it were the greatest accomplishment in the world. So fun to watch.
...actually, his first retrieve was the plastic wad deposited by a missed shot...followed by two more plastic wads. That ever happen to others?
Hope you're having a fun and safe 2023 bird season.

Congratulations—to you and your pup.

So, is your question about the dog retrieving the shot wad on shots where there was no bird to retrieve? If so, no, that’s not happened, but my dogs have had many(!!!) opportunities!

Yes. We've had 7 hunting dogs and every one except one has in their first year retrieved a wad. And have to believe that when training with a dummy launcher they get used to scenting the burnt powder on the dummy? I can't be the only one that's had this happen. Then again we've had some strange dogs in our family!
