The application of alcohol to the wood will simulate the look of it with finish on it. That way you can see how that darker section will look in relation to the rest of it.

no matter what - you may well end up using stains to get every thing to match.

If I was into the gun as far as you are I would Acra- Glass the head of the stock, especially a 1 frame 12 bore. I will be doing my 0 frame 16 this winter. If you do a search on this site you should be able to find a couple old threads.
