Default A1 Special gold inlay in Askins book

Please excuse me for asking this but what is the gold inlay on the A1 shown in the front of "Modern Shotguns and Loads" by Capt. Askins? There is a copy for sale on ebay and I can't make out what the inlay is. It kinda looks like a unicorn and it is driving me nuts trying to figure out what it is.

Is the location of this gun known? Has it been seen in the last 70 years? Looks like a smallbore gun from the pictures. I have no idea where my copy of the book is hence the questions.
