The spurred hard rubber dog's head butt plate was replaced in production in the early 1920's. Generally speaking, a gun of 1898 vintage without the spur has very likely had the butt plate replaced at some point.

14 in length of pull. It measures the same as a 1914 vh however the pitch seems to be different and it is curved. Wear is consistent. Thats what I thought Dean. Thanks. Never say never right.

It could be a factory restock.
Any gun returned for a restock after the mid 1920s would not have a spur. Post pics of the gun.

Unless that stock was originally at least 3/4" longer than it is now, Iwould say it has probably been restocked at some point.
There is no evidence that the cutout in the wood for a spur has ever been filled as we often see on butt plate replacements. .
