December Pheasant hunt

George and I are headed to Nebraska the first of Dec. where we plan on bird hunting till the 11th then I'll be headed of for a muzzle loader Mule deer hunt in the Sand Hills for five days.We would welcome any suggestion on areas to hunt, I have the state map of public lands.

Robert...I've hunted pheasant in South Dakota for the last twenty years. We hunt around the Winner area. That's right in the middle of what's called the Golden Triangle; Tripp county and the two adjoining county's supposedly have the largest pheasant population per square mile than any place else in the U.S. Thus the name, "The Golden Triangle". In twenty years we've never not gotten a limit of birds each day. We're usually out there from opening weekend on for 3-4 weeks; sometimes longer. Never, ever, been disappointed. We usually get a few Grouse and Prairie Chickens as well. This would be a good area to consider.

Thanks Carl, we are open to about anything in that area. My mule deer hunt is in the NW corner of Nebraska so we are considering hunting SD.

I lived in the Sandhills for 5 years with the US Forest Service, yes, there is a Nebraska National Forest with a unit in the Sandhills. If you are interested in places to hunt chickens and sharptails send me a PM and I will tell you what I know. If you are deer hunting around Chadron, then you are closer to sharptail hunting than chickens, at least on the NE side. If you want to explore, I can direct you to public land where both species are available. I used to do spring grouse surveys while there.
