My son Henry (who some of you know) was trying out for the Shotgun Team at Clemson in South Carolina last week.
Tryouts are for the next 2 weeks as well.
They shoot trap, skeet and 5 stand.
When he was interviewed, the coach asked him when was the last time he shot skeet and he said two weeks ago.
What did you score? 24
What were you shooting? My 28 gauge H&R hammergun.
To which the coach responded: You can't shoot that - that's like a wooden tennis racquet.
Henry was quietly incensed. But Henry is an engineering student who thinks it's a good idea to make vintage Volvo 240 red-blocks develop 300+ horsepower with modern turbochargers.
Henry shot a 23 in his first qualifying round with his 28 H&R hammergun.
The coach has told him he must shoot AT LEAST a 20 gauge in competition.
I told him he has to be a good boy- at first.

Its nice to hear a school has a shotgun team these days. The coach needs some enlightenment however. Bigger isn't always better. When I shot registered skeet the 28ga was my best gauge. I shot the 12ga and doubles with a 20.

I agree !

28 gauge at skeet was the first gauge I made AAA . I shot the 20 gauge in the 12 gauge and doubles events as well the last few years !

I might add the 28 gauge was the gauge I broke my first 100 straight .

I shot trap in college and at the college midwest regionals with my old Mod1912 Win made in 1916. I had foam rubber padding duct taped on the stock. The others were all shooting modern semi autos and Browning Superposed bought by dad or the university. Some I beat, others beat me.

If he must shoot a 20ga, I'm sure you can find him a suitable 20ga Parker opened to skeet chokes.

Do they shoot american or international skeet?I would think someone could loan him a 20 ga. damascus hammer gun that would be suitable to the coaches needs

That coach would probably crap himself if he saw damascus barrels. BTW, I play tennis on a couple of travel tennis teams (an over 55, and open league), and for giggles sometimes we play with wooden raquets.

I think I will send him down my short barreled Grade 2 12 gauge for skeet. It has nice Damascus bbls. The other kids will probably run for cover when he shoots it.

My Grandson has a shooting scholarship to Hillsdale College in MI. He shoots all the games, including trap, with his Blaser F3. If I gave him a SxS, he would try to tilt it 90 degreees

Big D: Good on said grandson for going to Hillsdale!! For his shotgun choice issues, I'd recommend shock therapy.
