I believe that the D designates damascus, the 3 the grade, which is what we generally call a D-grade.

The right flat on underside of your Damascus barrels will be stamped D for Damascus and above it a number indicating the Crolle twists in the pattern. |

Sounds like these barrels need the whole Monty. You say the forearm loop/lug is loose & needs re-soldered. I wonder what else may have come loose as well.
Send the barrels to Brad Bachelder for his inspection. Then follow his recommendations for repair and refinish. |

D on the action water table indicates grade, (Grade 3). D on the barrel flats indicates Damascus steel. They are two different Ds.

Its not a substitute for a full refinish but often the pattern can be brought out by etching same as during a refinish. Results vary depending on a lot of factors but often it looks appropriate to the rest of the gun.
