Default Whitworth "wheat sheaves" Mark.

Would someone care to post a clear picture of the "wheat sheaves" stamp that is evident on some Whitworth Steel Parker barrels? The picture doesn't have to be from a Parker barrel. If anyone knows of a good picture of this mark in a book that we might own, that would be a good reference also. Thanks.

Thanks, Larry and Dave. I'm looking at a nice British gun with a mark that looks like the Whitworth mark but no "trade mark" surround. I think it is a real Whitworth mark because the maker has used Whitworth barrels on some of his guns. I'll let you know if I score.

Bill you will notice that in the picture above that the left barrel dose not have the Trade Mark stamp. It is unclear if that part of the stamp was struck from the barrel or if the Trade Mark and Sheaves of Wheat were two individual stamps and the Trade Mark only applied to one barrel of the pair. If you look closely at the stamp below it would appear that to completely remove the Trade Mark stamp with a file you would also remove most or all of the Sheath stamp which would indicate to me they were two separate stamps.

Thanks for the comments, Larry. We are learning something here. However, the gun I'm looking at has a mark that is looking less like the Whitworth sheaves all the time. It is still a great gun and I may bite the bullet. Hope to see some of you posters at the Northeast. Thanks again for the pictures.

Default Whitworth Barrels

Some(?) Whitworth barrels were numbered and shipped with certificates. The Czar gun is a good example. There may be pictures of this in the Julia catalog; I'll check my disc.
Parker probably turned or filed some Whitworth barrels to achieve weight or balance specified by the customer. This might remove Whitworth's marks.

Best, Austin

Possibly all or most Whitworth tubes were shipped with certificates. However, the assumption would be that gunmakers thought them worthless and discarded them.

Default Whitworth Trade Mark

I could not find a picture of the Whitworth Trade mark in my Czar gun file. The Whitworth registry numbers are stamped on the barrel flats.

Best, Austin
