If you haven't already tried it take the forend off and see if that helps. Do you store the gun fired or cocked?
If the linkage from the top lever to the locking bolt is broken you won't get the gun open without taking the butt stock off to manually retract it away from the barrel lug. If you store it in the fired position its possible something else might have broken. I had an old P grade crack a mainspring plunger once and from there the gun wouldn't open fully because it was fighting to cock the hammer. |

I once had a guy send me a gun that he thought would not open only because the gun was un cocked and he didn't want to force it and risk breaking something. He was used to the gun always being cocked and the barrels just falling open.
When I got the gun, I opened it, it cocked and I said to myself, there is nothin wrong with this gun. Not saying that is the issue here, just a funny story. Sounds like you have some sort or mechanical issue that needs addressed. If your lever is opening and the gun is opening 1/8", then there should be nothing wrong with the bolting assembly. Sounds cocking related to me.

I once had a similar problem and it was the cocking slide. The gun would open almost all the way with the forend off but it would not take down. I had to force it closed again and then it would take down on the second attempt. Off to the gunsmith it went.
