Default Grip Cap ?

A friend of mine is looking at a 12 gauge, V grade, Remington era gun, with a single trigger. The grip cap say's Remington Arms. Is this correct?
I have seen very few Remington guns myself, and don't know.

Dave, is it a "transition" gun (ser. # 236ish) or a very early Illion gun?

Dave if it's a late gun it could say Remington on it and I have seen late guns that had earlier caps.

Dave I just looked at three guns with serial numbers in the 230-241 range and all the caps said Parker Bros.

Dave, I had a nearly unfired [(I]original finishes)[/I]VHE Skeet 12 ga., serialed in the later 230's, with a Remington marked PG cap that I sold at the old Toledo show in the '60's and I seem to remember another or two that I have seen over the years that I felt were original!

A 230XXX gun would have been made in 1929, five years before Remington aquired Parker Guns. 236531 was the first Parker produced under Remington and those produced until the Parker project was moved ti Ilion are generally considered "transition" guns and display characteristics of both Parker Bros. and of the Remington Parker. Remington had an ample supply of grip caps cast with "Meriden Ct." and we see examples of very late guns with this cap. (Eric, what is the cap on your NIB VHE skeet gun?) I would think a Parker shotgun with a Remington grip cap must have been sent to Remington for repairs and such a cap was installed then. I would also think the majority of Parker shotguns with a Remington grip cap should also have Remington repair codes stamped into the barrel flats.

I'll qualify this whole paragraph by saying "never say never" and "but there is an exception to every rule" and "but not always".

Just saw a gun with April 1945 Remington repair codes with a Remington grip cap, no Parker marking at all. They must have run out because this is a restock, probably from the 1945 repair.

I don't know the S/N. He just called me and asked about the grip cap.
I didn't know, so I told him I'd try and find out. I'll try and get more info from him.
Might just buy the gun myself. I don't have a Remington Parker. :-)
