Default New Pup - Update

Just wanted to show a recent image of our Brittany pup, Annie. She is exactly what we had hoped for. Smart, bold, and affectionate. Loves to train and I am hoping to run her in a NAVHDA Natural Ability test in late April.

What a beautiful pup! How old is she? And has she dipped her toes in the water yet? Water is still pretty chilly in VA right now.

A Brittany doing what they do best in the off season, taking your chair. Ours keeps mine warm and guarded for me

She will be five months old end of the month. I was able to get her walking through creeks and such before it got cold.

I'm hoping I will have a good amount of time in April to get her swimming prior to the test.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, I'll just delay testing her until May-July.

As I'm sure you all know, the worst thing you can do is make that initial introduction to water an unpleasant experience. Patience is key. She is pretty fearless so far, so I'm not worried about it.

I had a very young Griff pup go fishing with me one early spring day in NH. He was walking along the stream bank when a scent drifted across the stream from the other side. Who knows what the scent was- a grouse, an old candy bar, beaver castor? His nose pulled him in that direction causing him to tumble end for end down a steep 5’ embankment crashing into the water. He surfaced and started pumping his legs but he was too vertical to get much traction. I hopped down over the bank and was able to reach out and guide him to shore. He scrambled up the bank shook off with me enthusiastically praising him and seemed no worse for wear. But he was shy of water after that for months until a really hot day at the beach in Maine at low tide. He romped that tidal flat finding every tidal pool deep or not to cool off while I threw bumpers. All of this happened mere days before his first NA test at 9 months old. He passed. Phew. Was a total water hound after that.
I agree that one n Ed’s to be as cautious with water introduction as you do gun fire.
Good luck at the NA test! Keep sending photo!

Alfred ,that is a Beautiful Pup ! We had Britts for years ,We bred Maggie at five years old to Uncle Sam's Sumpter ,belonged to Dave Webb the author of Feisty Little Brittanys he lived in our area !After the breeding , then I had Three all running at the same time ! Maggie was a Tri Color which was a tall dog and very quiet on foot , she was just Tremendous on Grouse ,she never cared for Woodcock ,she would point them but when I shot them she would dash out ,grab it and instead of retrieving it she would dig a small hole and bury them !!!!! then start hunting again and I would go get my bird !!!! I loved those Dogs ,You just can't beat a Brittany for a Good Companion ! Enjoy !!!!!

Beautiful pup! I really like a pup that will look you in the eye. Your days will be filled with adventure now—and love—but you already know that.
