Reasonable project gun
There is a GH on Gunbroker, no. 224671817,that may interest someone looking for a reasonable project gun. It is at a pawn shop in a small town north of Denver and there are 2 days left on the auction and it has one bid at $400. It has a cracked through wrist, which didnt scare me, and at $400 opening bid I was interested enough to drive up and look at it. The crack is just as it appears, and could be economically fixed by one of the wood doctors. The unstated bad news is that the gun is off face by what I estimate at three to five thousandths, which in my neck of the woods is a $350 repair job. The good news is that the 30 inch bores are uncut and measure .728 and are almost pristine, with one small dent midbore that could also be easily removed. I did not measure wall thickness, but the cones, chokes and bores show no evidence of having been reamed or polished out. Chokes are .701 R and .694 L, stock is 14 1/4 x 1 7/8 x 3, 2 frame, 4-4 unstruck weight, ( I estimate 7 1/2 lbs overall) 2 1/2 inch chambers, 106 serial number (I didnt write it down and am only recalling this from memory) indicating about a 1902-3 manufacture, no bolt plate on the lug, screws touched but not buggered badly. Dam2 barrels have some pattern and smooth exteriors except for the one dent. Engraving is sharp and the frame has enought residual case to make the engraving stand out. Stock wood and checkering are surprisingly good except for the wrist crack. All in all, I'm seeing this as a very nice GH shooter for about $1000 total investment after the crack and off face action are fixed. I simply have no need for another 12 gauge 2 frame shooter, and am not really interested in going through the time and effort to get it fixed up. 10 years and 10 Parkers ago, I would probably have bought it. Thought I would share my findings in case anybody is looking for such a gun. I have absolutely no financial interest in the gun, one way or the other.
