Default + mark?

I have a set of 1898 Damascus barrels with this mark + on the barrel flat section by the lug on each side. It is choked very full. Anyone know what these mean? I don't recall seeing these before. Thanks Gerald.

Not known for sure. Much discussion has been had on it. It is thought to be an inspector mark of sort. It has been found on a few different places on the Parker gun.

There are some who believe it indicates that a barrel is over bored. It is not always found on the flats of both barrels - sometimes just one. There is even some supporting data someone has where the bores of barrels with the + have been measured and have turned out to be larger than the nominal bore diameter for the gauge.

Mr. Suponski has offered his thoughts on this subject in the past.
