Default Choke

I’m looking at a Parker and it has a letter that states both barrels have 253 pellets of 7 shot in a 30 inch circle at 40 yards, how does that equate to choke?

You need to know the total number of pellets in the shotgun shell. Then divide the # of pellets in the 30" circle by the total # of pellets in the shell to get a percentage. 25%=IC 50%=MOD 75%=FULL

Average # pellets in 7 1/2 shot:

1 1/4oz= 437
1 1/8oz= 394
1 oz= 350
7/8 oz= 306
3/4 oz= 262

I’ll have to look into it further should be in next week or so. It has 30 inch barrels so anything less than full choke would be great for me to use on the Sporting Clays course

Chokes can be changed over time. Always good to do your own patterning.

From surviving hang-tags we see 12-gauge 30-inch guns being targeted with 1 1/8- or 1 1/4-ounce loads.

125594 12-gauge, 2 3-4 inch, 1 1-8 ounce.jpg

213855 12-gauge, 2 5-8-inch, 1 1-4 ounce.jpg

Number 7 Tatham Chilled Shot goes 299 pellets to the ounce -- 1 1/8 ounce would be 336 and 1 1/4-ounce 374. So, 253/336 = 75.3% or 253/374 = 67.6%.

Those tags make it look like mine will be pretty close to a full choke. A little tight for Sporting Clays but I’ll make do.

By the Parker records those are most likely full chokes. Men's Department chokes.
