Default New companion:

This summer was a difficult one, lost my two dogs due to old age related health issues. Jenna was nearly blind and deaf, my little buddy for 16 years. Kira, my Akita Shepherd mix was 13. After a month or so of adjusting to my lonely new reality I decided it was time to find a new friend.
After a few days of searching regional shelters I located a potential partner that had been surrendered by the previous owners, but had not yet met the required five day impound. On the fifth day I left early for the Denver Animal Shelter, a little over an hour’s drive. I was second in line and waited patiently while conversing with the others like me.
We were all issued numbers when the building opened for business. When my number was called I was asked which dog on the wall of photographs was I interested in. I replied that the dog had not been listed for adoption, but despite that I wanted to meet her. I was instructed to take a seat and wait for my number to be called again.
It all worked out and my new five year old German Shepherd and I headed home to settle in. I renamed her “Leidy”. She’s an extremely intelligent dog and learned her new name very quickly. We do two daily walks averaging three miles, not too shabby for a seventy year old man. Leidy has added ten pounds since her adoption, up to 65 pounds. A red squirrel has Leidy’s attention in the second photo.
