I totally know about getting several with the first few shots, then missing the rest of the hunt, and getting a few more at the end.

It’s dove! Hit ‘em when you can and enjoy the heck out of the beginning of the hunting seasons.
Thanks for sharing your hunt.

Our wedding anniversary is at the end of October, the last of the dove season. It fell on a Saturday so I said I would hunt that afternoon before we went out for supper (back then it was hunting only after 12 p.m.) The limit was twelve at the time, and as the time to leave came to go home I had eleven. Only needed one more, only needed one more, only needed one more. Well I missed everything I shot at, probably a dozen and never got that only one more. Some birds could have landed on my head they came in so close. The other half was not amused at me being an hour late coming in from hunting.

I always thought that missing the last bird of the season was a good omen for the next season...

Biggest threat right now is the weather. The rain is supposed to be over by noon tomorrow so let's hope that is the case and our host stays the course and does not cancel

Due to the drought, the corn did nothing. So the farmers are chopping every field for silage. Doves will have a feast for a long time here.
