Default Checkering Question

I recently bought a VH that someone sanded off the checkering from the stock. I would like to rechecker it and need info for the type of pattern, number of the lines per inch and if diamond pattern matches the forearm. Are the diamonds flat or pointed? I'm looking to purchase checkering tools and need the info in order to purchase them. Thanks for any and all help.

A VH would have a two point pattern. With spacing at 18-20 lines per inch. I usually cut VH and PH grades at 18 lpi. The checkering would not really be fully pointed.

If you search the forum for photos of VH guns, you should be able to find a ton of photographic examples of what the pattern looks like.

If you have not checkered before, I would not really recommend a parker being your first attempt if you are to truly do it correctly. The Parker point wrist pattern looks simple, but it is actually very difficult to execute CORRECTLY. You should practice a lot on scrap and old stocks just to get a feel for the tools first.

And please… dont muck it up.

Parker VH forend checkering - pay no attention to the engraving on the latch.
Gough ordered six VH Parkers that he would engrave specially for some of his dearest friends.

I would not have expected to see that tip on the same gun as that latch. In fact, I think it's unlikely that tip left the factory on a VH, as it has the 'lip'.

Aw nuts!!

I should have said "Pay no attention to the engraving on the latch or the shaping and engraving of the tip" as Gough ordered six VH Parkers to engrave and give to his dearest friends.

Would he have replaced the tip with one he had already done, or engraved the guns as they were ordered, with smooth tip? it would be interesting to see the SNs on the tip and latch.

Actually I don't think that tip has the "lip" but rather it is beveled much like the tips on the Invincibles.

Thank you very much for all the input. I'll start my search for checkering tools and to build a cradle.

Just at my local Gunshop and he offered to let me take his tools and cradle. He also told me to practice a lot before taking on a Parker. Also suggested I talk with Larry Delgrego before starting. I was just at his shop so he could correct the "doubling" problem with my 28ga. repro and feel really comfortable asking him a few questions.
