Thanks Brian, Thats what I had assumed, I have done a similar repair on a VH before, but was just curious if there was a trick I was unaware of.

just bought some nice american walnut pieces from bell forest products to fix a toe on an old ithaca. with my power miter box and bench belt sander made the new to to an exact match. drilled hidden pin hole for brass pins and adhered with defcon 2 ton epoxy. adhered incredibly well, touched up with a little stain to match color to stock and in the process of refinishing with permalyn products. so far so good. will sen u a picture. hardest part was sanding the stock after finish was removed. 220, and 320 grit. a day each grit. masking tape over the checkering to no wear it down any more.!
