Cleaning out a closet prior to an estate sale I found a shotgun owned by my grandfather. Had heard about it but no one could find it and we thought it was gone. Just located this forum and association yesterday.

It is a 1907 and hammerless 12 gauge I think. Frame size is 2 but there is a "k" next to the 2. What does that mean? Weight is 4 and there is a "5" after that. Vulcan steel.

Looks like there is tape on the stock because of a crack.

Pictures follow. Any info anyone can share? Any recommendations for a gunsmith to repair the stock and refurbish?

Hi Dick - Welcome!

That looks to be a very decent 12 gauge VH, except for the crack. Looks like it was well cared for.

Does the serial number on the side of the barrel lug match the serial number on the water table (action flats)?

That looks like the original leather-trimmed canvas case too.

We don't know, but we see that K on quite a few barrel lugs. I've also recorded B, F, I, P, R, X and various tiny numerals on the lug in addition to frame size numeral.

There are probably more lugs with only the frame size numeral though.

Dennis Earl Smith that Dave recommended is fabulous. Also consider member Brian Dudley for wood work, another wood magician amongst other gun repairs.
